I met Felix Biller ten years ago and we instantly connected on a personal and musical level and became friends. Personally, I believe that I played a small part in him playing in a Jazz trio and in naming this trio PRIM ('unison'). Since I heard a first demo in 2015, their music has brought me great joy and I am thankful for the steps shared. It is therefore an honor to have been asked by the band to contribute the liner notes to “Meridian Steps”.
People on the same Meridian share a time zone, they are in unison. The three musicians in PRIM have grown together in terms of musical and personal understanding since their last album was released in 2020. Adapting to the challenges of a global pandemic required trust and strength, especially when live performances were not possible. Time and space had to be re-defined, making way for new opportunities as well as letting others go. Unintentionally, all of their past steps have led the band to settle on the same Meridian. From there, they started to work on a new album, which would become their most complex, yet most consistent work. By pushing boundaries and without forgetting their roots, they show what Jazz should sound like in 2023 – urgent, without any boundaries, in unison. I already cannot wait for PRIM's next step, but when I listen back to that demo from ages ago, “Meridian Steps” is by far their most refined and most ambitious work yet.
